Someone asked the question on Yahoo Answers, How do you find out what a mug is worth? This mug is green and marked in the bottom with a letter H in a circle and has the number 497.

My Answer;

One way to estimate the value of collectible mugs is to look on eBay and other on-line sites where collectibles are sold. There are many different types of mugs and you have not given enough information.

Another way to access value of a collectible mug is to look the mug up in books devoted to giving values to mugs and other collectibles.

The markings that you describe tell the batch number when the mug was made. But other important factors are the style, manufacture, material that it is made of (i.e. glass, china, plastic, etc.), time period that it was made, etc.

Your mug might be an Anchor Hawking mug which is collectible. But without knowing more about it that is just a guess.

The main thing to consider with all collectibles is condition. If your mug is one of the sought after brands, and it is in good condition, no chips, cracks, missing paint or other damage it may have some value to collectors.

Vintage Anchor Hocking Fire King Mugs

As a mug collector I am always coming across Anchor Hocking pieces. I see many vintage mugs on eBay (like the ones above) and other auction sites. So I thought I would do a post on Anchor Hocking. They are a glass manufacturer that has been around for over 125 years. According to a post that I read on eBay, the company is the second-biggest glassware supplier in all of North America. They sell their wares to consumers via traditional retail channels, businesses and they work with restaurants and hotels also.

According to the Anchor Hocking Glass Museum Website;

Anchor Hocking first came into existence when Isaac J. Collins and six friends raised $8,000 to buy the Lancaster Carbon Company, Lancaster, Ohio, when it went into receivership in 1905. The company's facility was known as the Black Cat from all the carbon dust. Mr. Collins, a native of Salisbury, Maryland, had been working in the decorating department of the Ohio Flint Glass Company when this opportunity arose. Unfortunately the $8,000 that was raised was not sufficient to purchase and operate the new company, so Mr. Collins enlisted the help of Mr. E. B. Good. With a check for $17,000 provided by Mr. Good, one building, two day-tanks, and 50 employees, Mr. Collins was able to begin Hocking Glass Company operations at the Hocking Glass Company.

The company, named for the Hocking River near which the plant was located, made and sold approximately $20,000 worth of glassware in the first year. Production was expanded with the purchase of another day-tank. This project was funded by selling $5,000 in stock to Thomas Fulton, who was to become the Secretary-Treasurer.

Now they are subsidiary of a larger hospitality firm, called Global Home Products. Based out of Lancaster, OH. On the company's website (see the link below), you can order glassware, dinnerware, containers, and other items for your home.

Gwinnett Place CID Coffee Mugs Hit of Day

The Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) Duluth,GA, led by Chairman Tom Wheeler, commissioned the production of 250 coffee mugs to commemorate the groundbreaking. But it seems that 250 was not enough.

One of the more collectible types of mugs are military mugs. There is a great variety in the types of military mugs that can be collected. They range form branches of the service, individualized mugs, to unit mugs. Every aspect of military life can be commemorated on a mug and often is. From solemn events that require respect and decorum to the funny and irreverent are covered on military mugs.

Some military mugs are officialy sanctioned items that are commissioned by the services themselves and others are personalized items that were produced for individuals. This means that there are large runs of some mugs where there may be thousands of them out there, which makes them easy to find. And for other military mugs, which may have been produced in smaller runs, this makes them rare and hard to find.

US Navy Naval Strike Warfare Center Mug / Coffee Cup

Branch mugs have crest and insignia that identify the different branches of the military. Such as Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. They often have the popular recruiting slogans on them and other types of promotional sayings from the armed services. One of the things that make these kinds of mugs collectible is that over time the services change their recruiting slogans, so mugs with older slogans are generally more sought after then mugs with newer slogans. Branch mugs are produced in large runs and are quite easy to find. You can even get them by visiting your local service recruiter. They are collectible because many people identify with the different branches of the military.

Some of my favorite military mugs are unit mugs. Almost every unit in the military has a mug that celebrates that unit and serves to boost the morale of unit members. Because I was in the Navy, I collect the mugs of ships. But you can collect the mugs of Army units, Coast Guard units and units of the other services as well. Some collectors are so specialized that they only collect the mugs of Submarines, or of Air Craft Carriers or of Army Units that served in Veit Nam. Unit mugs can be very unique and rare, it is not unheard of for a unit to commission the art work form a unit member, or to create a totally unique mug for itself. This makes for many variations and some famous units in the military have some highly sought after mugs.

Another type of military mug that is very interesting and fun to collect are operational mugs. Mugs that commemorate a particular deployment or exercise. I like these types of mugs because they give the collector a chance to learn the history of the unit and personnel that were involved in the operation. These types of mugs are usually made in smaller runs so they are often more rare then other mugs. And thus more collectible.

Military mugs come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Which can make for a very visually interesting collection.

Below is an interesting question that was recently asked about some collectible mugs. The answer gives a glimps into the research needed to answer these type of questions.

Q.What are my Schultz and Dooley mugs worth?
One is tall, with blue flowers around the body and a mustachioed face on the lid. The other is short, with a green shamrock painted on the front.

A. Schultz and Dooley were mug-shaped characters in a series of early TV commercials for Utica Club beer, which was produced by West End Brewing Co. (Webco) of Utica, N.Y.

The black-and-white commercials aired in the Northeast U.S. from 1959 to 1965, and increased beer sales and won awards.

The brewing company contracted with Schmetzer Inc., a New York importer, to buy 5,000 sets of ceramic mugs based on the advertising characters. The mugs were made in Germany.

The original mugs can be identified by their marks. Schultz, the large "German character" mug, is marked "The West End Brewing Co., Utica, N.Y., 59-CSM" in blue letters under the handle. Dooley, the smaller "Irish character" mug, is marked the same except "59-CDM" and in green. The bottoms of both are impressed "Webco, Made in Germany."

A pair of these original steins sells for about $300 to $500. Schmetzer imported thousands more of the steins during the 1960s, but these do not have the "CSM" or "CDM" marks. They sell for less, perhaps $50 a pair.
