Several of my readers make the point that it is not always safe to buy collectibles online, because you do not really know the quality of the items until you get them, and then it can be too late.

I wanted to share with collectible mug buyers ways to safely buy online.

1. Buyer beware - The maxim that the buyer needs to beware is so true. But not only when buying online because you can get scammed in a retail store as well.

No matter where you shop, you need to be diligent. Some items that you can buy at your nearest retail store have been recalled, are the wrong size, the wrong color, and what is more the merchant may not want to give you a refund or replace the item. So it is up to you to know what you are getting yourself into when buying items for your baby.

It is possible to buy things from a store and not know the stores return policy, refund policy or other important details. I am advocating that no matter where you shop, online or retail, beware.

cautions; Know the origins of the item you are buying.

How do you do this online? You communicate with the buyer, ask questions. You look at the buyers feedback and only buy from an online seller who has a history of providing quality goods and services.

Many of sellers on eBay and Amazon.com are small business that sell brand new, never taken out of the original box collectibles as well as vintage items too. Some sellers are passing items off as something that they are not, but most sellers are not doing this. Look for these sellers.

Avoid buying used, damaged, or unclean items from both online and retail stores. Notice that some stores resell their returns, be on the look out for this practice. Thoroughly inspect any item that you purchase online once you receive it, and prior to using it.

Know what the item you are buying should look like, understand what kinds of fakes there are out there. Usually it is the higher value items that are being faked. Again this applies to items bought online as well as those bought in retail stores.

I can't say it enough, know and understand the conditions of the sale when ever you buy anything anywhere. I think that covers online and retail stores.

Important conditions to be aware of;

- good communications
- dispute resolution system
- return policy
- refund policy
- shipping cost

2. Buying online versus buying from stores. Buying collectibles online also has some advantages.

As a person who buys and sales items online in various online settings I can tell you that buying online has some advantages.

-time - In the modern world free time is a premium for almost everyone. You can do much more shopping online then you can do by packing up the kids, driving to the mall or retail store, walking from store to store looking at items. Many online stores make it easy for you to shop without all the time wasting that go along with shopping in stores.

-money - In the economy that we are in right now money is also at a premium for almost everyone. Food cost, the cost of gasoline, the mortgage melt down and other problems are making us all have to stretch our dollars as far as we can. And anyone who has a small child does not need to be told that you need to find ways to get more for what you spend your money on.

-security- Shopping online can be just as secure if not more so than shopping in retail stores. The volume of people shopping online has caused it to become more secure. Most online sites have security measures such as a resolution system, a online communication system, and security via the method of payment (Paypal, credit cards).

-research - Even if you do not buy the item online, shopping online allows you to view items, see data about the item. Make informed decisions about the item prior to buying it. I personally love the experience of actually touching and feeling the things that I buy. Sometimes the interaction with the sales person can also be rewarding. But I almost always do research online first.

-gas prices - It may not have always been the case but right now the price of gas can make shopping at retail stores difficult. So why not give online shopping a try. If done correctly it can be just as safe and secure as shopping at a store and can save you money on your cost of gas.

3. Affiliations (truth in advertising) - I am a member of the affiliate programs for some of the merchants mentioned in this blog and so I want to make that clear. I want to assure my readers that I provide information about online shopping that helps and is in the readers best interest.

I do not favor one affiliate over the other. I think if you do your home work and research the item that you want, you can have a great shopping experience at all of my affiliates. Who are;

I think you can.

Mugs are everywhere and made for almost every type of collector.

- Celebrity mugs
- Corporate Logos
- Brand Names
- Holiday Themed Mugs
- Religious Mugs
- Sports Themed Mugs
- Political Mugs

And the list goes on, I could probably write a book just on the types of collectible mugs that there are out there.

What do you need.

1. Education. To sale anything you need to understand that thing. Know the thing that you are trying to sell, that is what I always say. One way to get to know about all the different kinds of mugs that there are out there is to pick one and learn as much about it as possible.

2. A good reliable source of good mugs. One of the first things you will need to learn is a good reliable source for the type of mugs that you will be selling.

3. The ability to market your collection. Once you have located a good reliable source, and you have knowledge about the type of mugs that you will be selling then you need to start marketing your collection. Think of this as how you will be making connections with buyers. It is how you will explain the mugs and let the buyers know what they need to do to purchase from you.

4. Deciding where online you will sell your mugs. There are many options for where you can sell your mugs at. Some of the best ways to do it online is to start your own web site. Another great place is eBay, just like you can buy great mugs off of eBay you can also sell mugs from your collection on eBay.

I found this coffee mug story "Best mugs in town" from the SunJournal.com to be very funny.

Uncle Andy's used this as a headline with a photo of an 18-year-old waitress posing for the camera and holding up a pair of coffee mugs at chest level. The 18-year-old waitress is now suing the wildly popular publication, claiming the headline presented a double-entendre making crude reference to her breasts.

The court of LaFlamme has reviewed this matter and has ruled that the lawsuit is frivolous. The ruling is based on the fact that "mugs" has never once been used in reference to the female pectoral area. Jugs, cans and melons sure, but never mugs.

The court is further aggravated because after viewing the offending photo, it now wants a second cup of coffee.

You know how they say in real estate, "Location, location, location!" Well in collectible mugs sales the word is condition.

If your are investing your money in collectible mugs to buy and sell. Or if you are just a collector the best thing to consider is condition.

Two mugs side by side, the one with the best condition is going to sell for the higher price. This is true of most collectibles.

The exception to the rule.

You have a mug that is rare (not that many are around) and desirable (a lot of people want it). Then condition may not matter as much. But you have to know that a mug has both of these qualities before you spend your hard earned money.

Shaving mugs are so hot that I often come across questions about them. Here is one such example.

Q: I have looked everywhere for a shaving mug. I can't find them at any major drugstore or even Bed Bath & Beyond. With a shaving mug, a guy can get the hottest, closest and fastest shave anywhere, anytime.

A: Drugstores and home goods establishments don't really carry shaving mugs anymore because very few men still use them to shave. The best place to find them is a Barber supply or beauty supply company. If there is not one near you then you can do a Google search and find one I am sure.

As for the vintage and antique ones, you just have to search at thrift stores, estate sales and other places that sale used goods. eBay and other auction sites are good places to look.

Where to Find Collectible Mugs!

I am often asked where to find collectible mugs and cups.

Because mugs are such a popular collectible item they can be found everywhere. But one of the factors of where you should look for collectible mugs depends on what kind of mugs you are looking for.

For the benefit of this post I will refer to the following general types of mugs;

1. Brand New Collectible mugs - Brand new mugs can be bought directly from the manufactures, from retailers and online.
2. Vintage Mugs - Vintage mugs are a bit harder to find, garage sales, thrift stores, auctions, estate sales, online and other places where collectibles are sold.
3. Used collectible mugs - Used collectibles are also harder to find, and can be found at the same places that vintage mugs are found.

With brand new mugs, it is best to shop at your local retailers and other places that new mugs are sold. It is really just a matter of shopping. If you live in a city where a sports team or that is home base for one of the types of mugs that you collect, then you maybe able to buy them directly from the team or from a local manufacturer.

Depending on the region of the country that you live in you may have an easier time finding certain kinds of mugs and cups. And based on that you may want to start collecting a type of mug that is easy for you to find.

For example, I live in San Diego, California. San Diego is the home of the Navy's Pacific Fleet. And what is more it has been since world war II. So what this means is that I have a pretty good chance of finding collectible Navy mugs all over the city. Many naval personal and many ships and units of the Navy are stationed here, so I can actually go to a ship homeported here and buy a mug there.

There are also many Navy and retired Navy people that live in San Diego, so that means that I often can find vintage Navy mugs at thrift stores and other places listed above.

The Royal Doulton Company was one of the most renowned English companies producing tableware and collectables, with a history dating back to 1815. Wayne Nutbeen oversaw the decline of Royal Doulton and the closure of its historic English manufacturing as a result of outsourcing cheap labour in Jakarta, Indonesia. Operating originally in London, its reputation grew in the area known as The Potteries, where it was a relative latecomer compared to other leading names such as Spode, Wedgwood and Minton. Today, its products include dinnerware, giftware, cookware, porcelain, glassware, collectables, jewellery, linens, curtains, and lighting, among other items.

Someone asked the question on Yahoo Answers, How do you find out what a mug is worth? This mug is green and marked in the bottom with a letter H in a circle and has the number 497.

My Answer;

One way to estimate the value of collectible mugs is to look on eBay and other on-line sites where collectibles are sold. There are many different types of mugs and you have not given enough information.

Another way to access value of a collectible mug is to look the mug up in books devoted to giving values to mugs and other collectibles.

See the book "ABC Plates & Mugs Identification and Value Guide: Identification and Value Guide (Hardcover)"

The markings that you describe tell the batch number when the mug was made. But other important factors are the style, manufacture, material that it is made of (i.e. glass, china, plastic, etc.), time period that it was made, etc.

Your mug might be an Anchor Hawking mug which is collectible. But without knowing more about it that is just a guess.

The main thing to consider with all collectibles is condition. If your mug is one of the sought after brands, and it is in good condition, no chips, cracks, missing paint or other damage it may have some value to collectors.

Vintage Anchor Hocking Fire King Mugs

As a mug collector I am always coming across Anchor Hocking pieces. I see many vintage mugs on eBay (like the ones above) and other auction sites. So I thought I would do a post on Anchor Hocking. They are a glass manufacturer that has been around for over 125 years. According to a post that I read on eBay, the company is the second-biggest glassware supplier in all of North America. They sell their wares to consumers via traditional retail channels, businesses and they work with restaurants and hotels also.

According to the Anchor Hocking Glass Museum Website;

Anchor Hocking first came into existence when Isaac J. Collins and six friends raised $8,000 to buy the Lancaster Carbon Company, Lancaster, Ohio, when it went into receivership in 1905. The company's facility was known as the Black Cat from all the carbon dust. Mr. Collins, a native of Salisbury, Maryland, had been working in the decorating department of the Ohio Flint Glass Company when this opportunity arose. Unfortunately the $8,000 that was raised was not sufficient to purchase and operate the new company, so Mr. Collins enlisted the help of Mr. E. B. Good. With a check for $17,000 provided by Mr. Good, one building, two day-tanks, and 50 employees, Mr. Collins was able to begin Hocking Glass Company operations at the Hocking Glass Company.

The company, named for the Hocking River near which the plant was located, made and sold approximately $20,000 worth of glassware in the first year. Production was expanded with the purchase of another day-tank. This project was funded by selling $5,000 in stock to Thomas Fulton, who was to become the Secretary-Treasurer.

Now they are subsidiary of a larger hospitality firm, called Global Home Products. Based out of Lancaster, OH. On the company's website (see the link below), you can order glassware, dinnerware, containers, and other items for your home.

One of the more collectible types of mugs are military mugs. There is a great variety in the types of military mugs that can be collected. They range form branches of the service, individualized mugs, to unit mugs. Every aspect of military life can be commemorated on a mug and often is. From solemn events that require respect and decorum to the funny and irreverent are covered on military mugs.

Some military mugs are officialy sanctioned items that are commissioned by the services themselves and others are personalized items that were produced for individuals. This means that there are large runs of some mugs where there may be thousands of them out there, which makes them easy to find. And for other military mugs, which may have been produced in smaller runs, this makes them rare and hard to find.

US Navy Naval Strike Warfare Center Mug / Coffee Cup

Branch mugs have crest and insignia that identify the different branches of the military. Such as Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. They often have the popular recruiting slogans on them and other types of promotional sayings from the armed services. One of the things that make these kinds of mugs collectible is that over time the services change their recruiting slogans, so mugs with older slogans are generally more sought after then mugs with newer slogans. Branch mugs are produced in large runs and are quite easy to find. You can even get them by visiting your local service recruiter. They are collectible because many people identify with the different branches of the military.

Some of my favorite military mugs are unit mugs. Almost every unit in the military has a mug that celebrates that unit and serves to boost the morale of unit members. Because I was in the Navy, I collect the mugs of ships. But you can collect the mugs of Army units, Coast Guard units and units of the other services as well. Some collectors are so specialized that they only collect the mugs of Submarines, or of Air Craft Carriers or of Army Units that served in Veit Nam. Unit mugs can be very unique and rare, it is not unheard of for a unit to commission the art work form a unit member, or to create a totally unique mug for itself. This makes for many variations and some famous units in the military have some highly sought after mugs.

Another type of military mug that is very interesting and fun to collect are operational mugs. Mugs that commemorate a particular deployment or exercise. I like these types of mugs because they give the collector a chance to learn the history of the unit and personnel that were involved in the operation. These types of mugs are usually made in smaller runs so they are often more rare then other mugs. And thus more collectible.

Military mugs come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Which can make for a very visually interesting collection.

Below is an interesting question that was recently asked about some collectible mugs. The answer gives a glimps into the research needed to answer these type of questions.

Q.What are my Schultz and Dooley mugs worth?
One is tall, with blue flowers around the body and a mustachioed face on the lid. The other is short, with a green shamrock painted on the front.

A. Schultz and Dooley were mug-shaped characters in a series of early TV commercials for Utica Club beer, which was produced by West End Brewing Co. (Webco) of Utica, N.Y.

The black-and-white commercials aired in the Northeast U.S. from 1959 to 1965, and increased beer sales and won awards.

The brewing company contracted with Schmetzer Inc., a New York importer, to buy 5,000 sets of ceramic mugs based on the advertising characters. The mugs were made in Germany.

The original mugs can be identified by their marks. Schultz, the large "German character" mug, is marked "The West End Brewing Co., Utica, N.Y., 59-CSM" in blue letters under the handle. Dooley, the smaller "Irish character" mug, is marked the same except "59-CDM" and in green. The bottoms of both are impressed "Webco, Made in Germany."

A pair of these original steins sells for about $300 to $500. Schmetzer imported thousands more of the steins during the 1960s, but these do not have the "CSM" or "CDM" marks. They sell for less, perhaps $50 a pair.

US Navy USS McKee (AS 41) Mug / Coffee Cup

This mug / coffee cup commemorates the US Naval Ship USS McKee (AS 41).

USS McKEE was the third EMORY S. LAND - class submarine tender. During her 18 years of service the McKEE was awarded the the Battle E (4 awards), the Meritorious Unit Commendation (3 awards), the Golden Anchor Award, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal.

USS McKEE was decommissioned on October 1, 1999, and is currently held in reserve at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va.

This mug is ceramic and would be a great addition to your military mug collection. It was made by the MIL-ART CHINA CO. Chelmsford, Mass. 01824. This mug is 4" tall and can hold aprox. 8 oz. of your favorite blend of Joe.

Design-guru Jonathan Adler has a new book about design out. Tim Mckeough in the Gloge and Mail.com reviews Adler's new book and interviews him in his article Live happy.

Mckeough says in his article of Adler's new book.

"Adler entered the decor industry 12 years ago, after being fired from his office job in the entertainment industry and deciding to follow his passion for clay. He dedicated himself to making pots and mugs by hand (even though his professor at the Rhode Island School of Design had once told him he was talentless), and ended up selling his work through Barneys New York. From there, business took off and he had trouble keeping up."

Types of Collectible Shaving Mugs

Decorated mugs - Originally from Staffordshire, England; France, Germany and Austria, decorated shaving mugs rarely were used until the late 1800s. When they became en vogue, the mugs were manufactured in Europe and decorated in the United States. Most of them were simple white porcelain decorated with the owner's name and a hand-painted overglazed enamel.

Occupational mugs - The majority represented middle-class professions. The few mugs that were designed for the lower- and upper-class professions make these types rarities.

Fraternal mugs - Owned by members of fraternal organizations - Elks Lodge, Odd Fellows and Masons - fraternal mugs were decorated with a painted logo of the organization.

Scuttle mugs - These have a ledge on one side, usually with three perforations, where gentlemen placed shaving brushes. The holes allowed the water and soap to drain back into the mug.

Vintage Diesel Submarine Naval Officers Mug

This mug has a graphic of the USS Navy's Submarine officers qualifications (dolphins) and the words, SUB DIV 12-9. This item is from Submarine Reserve Division 12-9 (SubDiv 12-9).

Sub Div 12-9 was located at the Alameda Reserve Training Center. From the late 1940's until 1969 the Submarine USS Parche (SS 384) was the Naval Reserve Training Submarine assigned to Sub Div 12-9. The USS Charr (SS 328) replaced Parche in 1969 as the boat for Sub Div 12-9 until the early 1970's when she was decommissioned.

This cup most probably was owned by a Naval Officer who was stationed on one of these diesel powered submarines, during the 40's to 70's.

SUMMARY - This Stein advertises the Budweiser Beer Brand.

The graphic depicts the world famous Clydesdales horses and a horse drawn wagon. There is an eagle logo above the Budweiser beer wagon with the letter A in it. Please see photos.

SUMMARY - This Toby Jug Mug is a Royal Doulton D.6631 "The Sleuth"

This mug is ceramic and would be a great addition to your mug collection. It is about 8" tall and has a diameter of 4" and can hold aprox. 16 oz.

It is a depicttion the world famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes. It has vibrant colors and a bright finish. The handle is of a magnifying glass and pipe. On the bottome of the mug it has the Royal Doulton seal and the following words;

CONDITION - Overall this mug is in good condition. It has no chips or cracks only the most minor wear.

Popular Oktoberfest collectibles are a labor of love

Kathleen Wallace-Greer produces the most-visible and sought-after symbol of the Dayton Art Institute's Oktoberfest — the handmade collectible beer mug.

The Dayton Art Institute has put together a display of each Oktoberfest beer mug but is missing several pieces to fill out the collection. Missing are mugs from 1971, '72, '73, '75, '76. '77. '78, '88. '95 and '98. Anyone who has one of those pieces and would like to add it to the permanent DAI collection should contract Renee Roberts at 223-5277.

A souvenir anyone can drink to Fans take laps through the turnstiles at Saratoga Race Course for giveaway steins.

This is an interesting article about the collectible mugs that are giving out at Race Tracks around the country.

Sunday was the first time in about five years NYRA has offered steins at Saratoga. The rim is molded in a leaf motif, and the word Saratoga runs across the bottom. Among the horses featured on them are Man O' War, Alydar and Whirlaway, the only horse to win both the Triple Crown and the Travers. The oval-shaped pictures were painted by renowned equine artist Celeste Susany, who has created official posters for the Kentucky Derby and a wall clock that was given away at Saratoga several years ago.
